The Colors of Mud
These sediment formations are essentially ancient mud. Undoubtedly, it was not so colorful when it was originally deposited. Over millions of years, chemical-laced water percolated down leaving behind traces of compounds that imparted some color. Even now, though, the color is subtle at best. Photographers, however, can manipulate these soft colors into a more photogenic presentation. Millions of years of geologic evolution brought to life with a few clicks of the mouse.
